The southern Hills village loop
Most visitors never make it south of Hahndorf, which is exactly why this loop is so rewarding. The high southern plateau of the Adelaide Hills is a landscape of dairy paddocks, gold-rush history and unhurried country towns.
The plan
Begin in the gold-mining village of Echunga, then head to the rolling vineyards around Macclesfield for a tasting or long lunch. Strike west across the plateau through Meadows' dairy country, then climb to the hilltop hamlet of Prospect Hill for its history museum and long views. The museum opens only on Sunday afternoons, so this loop is made for a Sunday. Pack a picnic or rely on the country pubs and bakeries along the way.
